What is Carboxytherapy?
Carboxytherapy is injection of CO2 under the skin for treatment purposes and increasing the regional metabolism in the tissue. CO2 gas is first used in 1930 (Royat thermals, France) and it has been used for medical purposes ever since. Treatment is quick, comfortable, efficient and non-surgical.
How is Carboxytherapy applied?
It is a very simple application; it depends on injecting carbon dioxide gas under the skin with 30G injectors. Injected gas is absorbed by surrounding tissues.
Through this application;
Vessel dilatation increases in subcutaneous microcirculation.
Capillary blood flow increases.
Potential of oxygen usage increases in tissues close to surface.
Edema and swellings are regulated (through elimination of excessive water)
PH levels are regulated.
It invokes tissue regeneration.
Increase in muscle tonus is obtained.
In which cases is it used?
It can be used in any case of injury and related pain that requires tissue regeneration. Therefore, it can be used separately or together with other treatment methods in case of sports injuries and any case of tissue damage.
How does Carbon dioxide affect regeneration?
It has an effect of capillary vasodilatation which dilates the vessels Dilatation of these capillary vessels results in carrying more oxygen to the area and elimination of the fluids inside the tissues.
Is it painful?
Some of the patients may feel slight pain in the injection area. This pain usually fades away in a couple of seconds. A sensation of warmth may be felt for 10-20 minutes due to increased blood flow.
What should be avoided after the treatment?
Bathing, swimming and saunas are not advised for 4 hours after the treatment. In the following periods, trauma should be avoided for half an hour after injections. Apart from that, patients can continue their routine activities.
How many sessions are required?
The number of sessions depends on the cause of the problem. Simple cases requires 1-2 sessions while chronic cases require much more.
Is Carbondioxide a toxic gas?
No. CO2 is a colorless, scentless gas and it is one of the last in the line of metabolic wastes in a living creature.
Our body produces approximately 200 ml of CO2 when resting. This amount can increase 10 times during physical exercise. We eliminate this gas which we produce in our tissues through lungs.
Therefore, there is no important side effect of carboxytherapy. Sometimes a slight empurpling may develop but this condition is temporary.
Carbon dioxide gas is used in high volumes for blowing up the abdomen in laparoscopic surgeries, also known as closed surgeries.
